Portage County Public Library
| Last updated on April 1, 2011 |
Our facilities mission is to provide information, support lifelong learning and promote reading and literacy.
Description:
The library seeks to fulfill adults' and childrens' literacy, lifelong learning, and entertainment reading needs through a wide variety of library materials, i.e. books, magazines, audiobooks, musical recordings, CD-ROMs, DVDs, videorecordings, and appropriate programming.
History:
Very briefly, the original library in town was a Carnegie building. That building has long since been torn down and replaced by a building on Church St. due to a generous benefactor, Charles M. White. Needs outgrew the capacity of the Church St. building and with successful fundraising and the help and cooperation of many individuals/organizations, a new building was constructed on Main St. The library once was a city library but is now a county library. The main building is at 1001 Main St., Stevens Point and three branches are found in the communities of Almond, Plover, and Rosholt.
