March of Dimes
The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. We help in communities by hosting fundraising events, and in turn, give the money to local health-care organizations through materials and grants. We raise funds locally, and spend funds locally.
Description:
The March of Dimes provides grants to health organizations to promote infant and maternal health. It also provides educational resources. Nationally, the March of Dimes funds research efforts in support of their mission. In 2003, the March of Dimes kicked off a 5-year, $75 million campaign to fight the leading cause of newborn death - prematurity.
History:
In 1938, Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the March of Dimes to defeat polio as it raged across the country, crippling and killing children in record numbers. The organization that FDR built was a unique partnership. While scientists worked in their laboratories, thousands of volunteers raised money to support research and help polio victims and their families. Within 20 years, the Salk Vaccine had been developed and polio was on the run. In 1958, the March of Dimes brought this formidable partnership to bear against another, even greater, challenge, birth defects, the nation's number one health problem.
