WINR - Wisconsin Interfaith Needs Response
| Last updated on November 7, 2011 |
Mission Statement: Motivated by God's love, WINR seeks to bring dignity to others by bringing agencies and faith communities together as partners to fulfill people's basic needs, educating individuals in the community in justice issues related to poverty and providing advocacy on behalf of people in need.
Description:
WINR operates the Donated Wheels Program which takes donated vehicles and makes necessary repairs and then matches the vehicles with needy families. This program started in 1997 in the Fox Valley area and has had great successes. Currently the program is getting started in Portage County. Participants are required to take a vehicle maintenance course and a financial management class before they receive the vehicle.
History:
The program began in 1997 in the Fox Valley area in response to concern over welfare reform. A passionate group of people saw a need in the area for assistance with reliable transportation in order for low-income individuals to get jobs, keep those jobs, and even get better jobs. Since 1997 the program has placed 130 vehicles with families. 47% of vehicle recipients were able to get better paying jobs because they had access to reliable transportation. In 2005 the program was opperating in Waupaca, Outagamie, Winnebago, and Calumet counties. The program has received a Federal Department of Transportation grant to assist in expanding service to an additional 6 counties, including Portage County.
