HPPP Giving Gardens
| Last updated on January 17, 2012 |
The HPPP Giving Gardens program promotes and supports group volunteer efforts to grow local produce for Portage County's families in need.
Description:
The Portage County Hunger and Poverty Prevention Partnership is made up of individuals from both the public and private sector. Our mission is to "develop prevention and intervention strategies to increase food security in Portage County." Through the Giving Gardens program, community businesses and organizations help fight hunger by developing and tending a community garden. The harvest goes to community agencies which prepare and/or distribute food to in-need individuals and families.
History:
The Hunger and Poverty Prevention Partnership was formed in October 2000, after the first Portage County Hunger Summit. Over the years, the Partnership has grown. In April, at the 2006 Poverty Summit, the Partnership expanded to include poverty issues and the name of the organization was changed to Portage County Hunger and Poverty Prevention Partnership. The Partnership developed four project teams to help address and solve hunger and poverty issues that face Portage County. The first Giving Gardens (formerly Community Gardens) were planted in 2001.
