| Last updated on July 29, 2011 |
The Literacy Council of Wood County works in cooperation with additional human service, healthcare, educational, and religious organizations to improve the basic literacy skills for Wood County adults by providing individualized programs incorporating strategies such as one-to-one tutoring, small group tutoring, and/or computer-based learning.
Description:
The Literacy Council of Wood County is an agency which works with Wood County adults to help them improve their reading, math, and English language skills. In addition, we provide basic computer, financial, and health-related literacy. We rely on volunteer tutors to help make a positive difference in the lives of area adults and families. Tutors are given training and material support to work with adult learners, plan lessons, and develop strategies for the learners to use.
History:
The Literacy Council of Wood County was incorporated in 1990 and began working with adult learners at the beginning of 1991. Since that time we have worked with immigrants from numerous countries as well as native English speakers to help them improve their English communication skills, reading, and writing skills. New programs included offering health literacy as of 2010, and computer literacy as of 2011.
