Community Industries Corporation enhances opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in community life as valued workers, neighbors and family members. CIC believes that Portage County is enriched by the presence and active participation of all of its citizens. All people have contributions to make that benefit community organizations and endeavors. We look to connect abilities of the individuals we serve to our community.
Description:
Community Industries provides Day, Respite, Transportation and Employment Services to individuals with disabilities. The Respite Division provides services to individuals regardless of age. All other divisions currently serve only individuals 18 years of age and older. We are a not-for-profit organization governed by a local self perpetuating board. We have over 70 full time employees in divisions other than Respite providing services to the persons we serve. Our Respite Division has over 100 part time employees. Opportunities for volunteering are primarily in our Day Services Division assisting persons with disabilities as they participate in the life of the community. Internships are available for Post Secondary students in the Employment and Day Services Divisions. Most of our funding for services comes through Family Care, Portage County Health and Human Services, The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (State of Wisconsin), and United Way of Portage County.
History:
Community Industries was established in 1965 as a means to "provide a place of employment for people with disabilities". It originally operated as the "Portage County Sheltered Workshop" and served six individuals. In 1973, the agency's name was changed to "Community Industries Corporation". Since then, Community Industries has acquired additional locations in the community. Our Park Ridge location houses our Administrative, Employment, and Repite Divisions. Four other locations are Day Service centers. We also operate a Pallet Manufacturing plant in Plover and house our Transportation/Landscaping Division on Algoma Street in Stevens Point. In 2007, 302 consumers/families received individualized services through Community Industries Corporation. In that year over 170 people were helped to work within the community with over 130 employers, 80 families received respite services, 46 people received day services, 340,000 miles of transportation were provided, and nearly a million dollars in combined sales were generated by our pallet and landscaping divisions.
