United Way Of Portage County

Agency Details:

United Way Of Portage County

Working together to mobilize the caring power of our community.

Description:
United Way of Portage County delivers on our mission statement - funding 35 different programs, which enhance the lives of an estimated 40,000 residents in Portage County. It is the largest non-governmental funding source for human care issues in our community.
But United Way is more than a funding source. United Way is a link between the business community and human service providers. United Way is a community partner, collaborating with various local organizations to address high-priority issues in Portage County. To help identify and respond to changing needs, United Way of Portage County has initiated a comprehensive quality of life assessment this year.
United Way of Portage County also promotes volunteerism. The United Way Volunteer Center offers a resource and referral service to all nonprofit organizations in the community and sponsors several activities such as Project Fresh Start, a school supply donation effort for children in need; and Make a Difference Day rake-a-thon for seniors.

History:
United Way of Portage County is the best way to help the most people in our community. It is a results-driven organization that focuses resources on high-priority human service needs.
In 1945, a group of concerned citizens formed the Stevens Point War Chest to help the war effort through a coordinated local fund drive. While the name and focus have changed, United Way continues to raise money through a community wide fund drive each year. In the 2004 campaign, over $1.95 million was pledged. United Way works to make sure your dollars are spent wisely on programs that meet the greatest human service needs in the community.

United Way of Portage County is one of 1,400 nonprofit United Ways in the United States. Each operates independently and is governed by a local volunteer board of directors.
