Junior Achievement - Portage & Wood Counties
Junior Achievement (JA) will ensure that every child in Wisconsin has an opportunity to obtain an understanding of the free enterprise system.
Description:
Junior Achievement is the world's largest and fastest growing organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics, and free enterprise. JA programs are taught by trained classroom volunteers from the community in Wisconsin, United States and 112 countries worldwide.
History:
Junior Achievement was founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, president of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, president of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. The first program, "The Company Program", was offered to high school students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of "Project Business" for the middle grades. In the last 25 years, JA gradually expanded its activities and broadened its scope to encompass an ever-widening student population. Locally, JA has been an established district in Portage County since 1991. In July of 2004 we merged with our largest satellite area, Wood County. We are able to effectively and efficiently expose an increasing number of our young people to the cornerstones of the free-enterprise system. One of our main goals is to build upon the solid foundation of the existing JA programs and collaborate with the school systems to reach all of the children in the Portage and Wood County areas.
