Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on July 7, 2010 |
The Flex Program cannot run without Team Leaders. By becoming a Team Leader, you join a group of Portage County’s finest leadership volunteers. Team Leaders play a pivotal role in helping the United Way of Portage County Volunteer Center mobilize thousands of volunteers each year. Being a Team Leader is a great way to develop leadership skills, strengthen job applications, and enhance your career or simply to put your gifts to use – all of which can be done by committing just a few hours of your time each month! The quality of the experience a volunteer has on a project is often affected by the Team Leader, especially if he or she is a new volunteer. Responsibilities: •Team Leaders are volunteers who make a commitment to help manage a volunteer project for a few hours each month. •Team Leaders are the primary contact at each project, act as a liaison between United Way of Portage County Volunteer Center and the organization, respond to volunteer questions about the project, ensure that the project runs smoothly, and complete attendance and impact information after the project. Experience has shown that if volunteers have a good experience, they will keep coming back time and time again. Even those who have a less than great experience, if approached appropriately, will continue to serve. However, a volunteer who has a bad experience that is not properly addressed by the Team Leader could be lost forever. Qualifications: Must be an active Flex member, at least 18 years old, willing to complete a background screening. Must be accessible via e-mail, comfortable leading a group of diverse volunteers, and be committed to making a difference in the community. Leadership Skills: •Organization: this is key to a successful project. •Management and motivation: keep volunteers engaged and connected. •Communication: an essential skill from the first communication with the volunteer to the thank you at the end of the project; must be outgoing. •Resourcefulness: recognize the unique capacity of each volunteer; find ways to maximize each person’s effectiveness and contributions during the project. Time Commitment: Must be willing to commit to leading at least one project a month for at least 4-6 months, or be a floating Team Leader. The floating Team Leaders have the ability to Team Lead a variety of different projects on different days and times as the need arises, while still committing to lead at least once each month for 4-6 months. Training Requirements: Must attend a 1 ½ hour introductory training session and attend at least one of the Team Leader meetings scheduled annually. New Team Leaders will be matched with a mentor from the existing pool of Team Leaders. This mentor will work with new Team Leaders for two or three projects until the new Team Leader is ready to lead on their own.
