Elementary school reading tutors are needed in Portage County schools. The focus is on emergent readers in first, second and third grade. Volunteers generally assist three teacher-identified students for 30 minutes each for a total of 90 minutes each week. The tutoring takes place during the school day. Activities may include: reading to the child, listening to the child read, helping the child sound out difficult words, and vocabulary, spelling and reading comprehension work sheets and games. Although a weekly commitment is required, flexibility is understood and volunteers can take time off whenever they need to. Volunteers are provided training and information on current reading strategies. This position is subject to criminal background check prior to placement. Volunteers need to provide their own transportation. This opportunity is sponsored by: Aging And Disability Resource Center Of Portage County
